Ray Watters
Ray was born in July of 1934 in Livingston in the 'heart' of pipe band country. Shortly after his family moved to Broxburn where a number of years later he started his 'apprenticeship' with the Broxburn British Legion Pipe Band. Unfortunately the band folded shortly after round about 1948. Soon after Ray found his way to the Pumpherston Pipe Band where he came under the wing of Willie Speed, who was teaching the corps at the time. Next, National Service intervened and for the next two years 1952-1954 Ray was with the Royal Scots. On demob it was back to Pumpherston until 1959. In 1960 Ray went south to join the police in Coventry, where upon amalgamation with Birmingham they were renamed the West Midlands Police, and he also joined the pipe band and that was in 1974. After modest success Ray became the Leading Drummer in 1978 and held that position until 1990, when he then retired. He did however stay with the band, and that is where you will find him today, where he likes to be, in the rear rank.
