David was one of the founding members of the Birmingham City Police Pipe Band, which became the West Midlands Police Pipe Band in 1974 with the amalgamation of other Police Forces.
Educated at Morrison’s Academy, Crieff, Scotland where he became a member of the School Pipe Band under the tutelage of renowned Pipe Major R. W Whitelaw, BEM who was the first Convener of the R.S.P.B.A. and who was the greatest influence on my Piping career.
The school Pipe Band won the West of Scotland School Pipe Band Competition 11 times ( 9 in succession in the 1950s) it also won the East of Scotland 5 times during the same period. In 1955 David was runner up in the West of Scotland Juvenile Solo Piping Competition.
In 1959 he joined the Birmingham City Police, later West Midlands Police and completing 36½ years service retiring with the Rank of Inspector. David was also Pipe Sergeant of the Band from 1970 until becoming Pipe Major in 1986 until retiring in 1995.
